Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers

Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers at UC Irvine

SHPE at UCI has been active for over 10 years empowering the latine community here at UCI. As part of both the OAI umbrella of orgs, we aim to connect our members to resources and opportunities through OAI or our National Organization. All engineering disciplines are welcome !

Over the course of the last 2 years the organization has grown significantly in the quality and amount of events which it has hosted. We most recently won Best Organization and Best President at the ESO Awards for 2026. As well as the best collaborative event with NSBE and FUSION.

SHPE’s core goal is to enhance our members' academic and professional careers. This is done in various formats through our professional and technical committees. Whose goal is to get our students ready for the industry by teaching technical and soft skills. On the academics side there is a big importance on receiving both academic support and a strong social life. Our Academics chair hosts study sessions where students can drop in and receive support from upperclassmen in the form of tutoring or advising.

Our SHPEtina's director is in charge of creating programs for the women in STEM here at UCI. In order to bring them more opportunities and share an atmosphere that is safe and stress free. Our Operations chair in combination with our Athletics chair creates events and games for our members to participate in, whether that be a recreational game of soccer or ice skating.

Lastly SHPE has a long standing relationship at Century High School. With our outreach program being now 14 years old. SHPE serves the underserved youth by informing them of the college and college experiences of being first gen, navigating finances and career paths. As well as enhancing their studies by hosting small STEM workshops such as LED boards, density and buoyancy experiments, as well as presentations on electricity and engineering related projects.

Current Work / Recent Updates

This year SHPE is working in collaboration with MAES, NSBE and FUSION to host the now annual Networking Dinner Night. This event brings together the participating orgs to meet with over 50 recruiters from various disciplines to go over their experiences in the industry.

SHPE is hosting in collaboration with Black In Tech a project showcase where various project teams will present their work and demonstrate some projects. The goal of the event is to introduce freshmen and sophomores to the opportunities on campus.

SHPE independently is working on a workshop series where we prepare our members for the SHPE National Convention through Resume workshops and some info-sessions with companies such as LADWP, Medtronic and Zephyr Rail. As well as a graduate school workshop with the USC Viterbi graduate division.
