Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS at UCI)

SEDS at UCI Logo

Our chapter was founded in 2024 by a board that wanted to build a space organization open to students from every major; committed to bringing together peers with a shared love of space. SEDS at UCI gives members an opportunity to network with peers across different majors who share a common interest in space including: aerospace, mechanical, electrical and computer engineering, physics, business, and other backgrounds. Members are constantly working with people who have experiences in things such as CAD, robotics, internships, etc.. This creates opportunities to learn from each other and network; members with backgrounds outside engineering shape decisions in ways an all-engineering group would not.

Our chapter, through its projects and events, gives members experience with tools and skills they can carry into other engineering teams, internships, and jobs. Members have worked with SolidWorks, 3D printing, fabrication, robotics, hardware, coding, and technical documentation across projects like our autonomous rover design competition and now our drag sail project.

It is our goal at SEDS at UCI to make mentorship accessible to members across year and experience levels. Board members work with interns, interns work with sub team leads, leads work with specialists, and specialists guide general members through their builds. The structure means no member is left to figure things out alone, and that nearly all members are contributing to mentorship. The result is that a first year student can do real hands-on engineering work in their first quarter, which is a difficult opportunity to find early on in your degree, when many design teams expect experience most students have not had yet.

Current Work / Recent Updates

Drag Sail Deorbit Project

The chapter's current engineering project is a 12U CubeSat functional prototype, designed to capture and deorbit defunct satellites and debris. The project itself contains five subteams, Debris Capture, Drag Sail, Structures and Systems, Propulsion, and Avionics and Controls with roughly 40 members. Subteam leads are currently being selected by application and interview, subteam general membership is open to anyone, with an inclusive application process. Subteams meet weekly in the lab and present progress to the full group biweekly. In an effort to be ambitious but realistic, our team has divided the project across two school years, with year one producing a functional model including hardware. In year two, we plan to convert our model into a launch ready craft.

Previous Projects

SEDS at UCI’s prior multi-team project developed autonomous rovers, with subteams responsible for mechanical design, fabrication, hardware, and team operations. Additionally, SEDS at UCI competed in the 2025 SDEC challenge with one of our teams placing 1st nationally!

Outreach and community

The chapter regularly organizes group events including a visit to the California Science Center last year, Solidworks info sessions, 3D printing class, and more. More information is available on our Instagram.

Drag Sail Deorbit Project

Board
Oversees the project as a whole. Each board member is assigned to one subteam and to work directly on design process.

Subteam Lead
Directs the design and manufacturing of subteam, assigns weekly tasks, and leads weekly subteam meetings. Selected by written application and interview.

Technical Specialist (1-3 per sub team)
Supports the subteam lead on engineering decisions, helps members with weekly tasks, and assists subteam leads in weekly meetings.

General Members (5-10 per sub team)
Contribute to subteam work; design, fabrication, and testing.

Subteams

Debris Capture
Designs and manufactures the capture system, including the magnetic detumbling system and net deployment.

Drag Sail
Designs the deployment system, selects sail material, manufactures the assembly, and simulates deorbit performance.

Structures and Systems
Designs the satellite shell, wiring, connections, and housings enclosing all other mechanisms.

Propulsion
Designs the rocket motor, including pressure vessels, valves, and propellant feed lines.

Avionics and Controls
Develops the software controlling the propulsion system, stabilization, and later integrates sensors for capture operations.
