Biomedical Engineering Society

The Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) at UC Irvine is a nationally recognized chapter of the national BMES organization. Our mission is to build an inclusive community for students interested in biomedical engineering through mentorship, career development, hands-on project experience, and outreach. Many students in the major dream of working in medical devices, research, or healthcare but aren't sure how to get there, so we bridge the gap between the classroom and the professional world. Each quarter, we host events that introduce students to careers in biomedical engineering, including industry info sessions, a research symposium, and a mentorship program that pairs students with working engineers and researchers. Something unique to our organization is our MedTech Founders Program, a year-long program where student teams take their own medical device idea through ideation, prototyping, and business development, giving members real experience in bringing a product from concept to reality.

Our past achievements include:

  • 2025-2026 Commendable Achievement Award (national runner-up)
  • 2024-2025 Outstanding Achievement Award (highest chapter honor)
  • 2023-2024 Commendable Achievement Award (national runner-up)
  • 2022-2023 Outstanding Achievement Award (highest chapter honor)
  • 2021-2022 Outstanding Societal Impact Award
  • 2020-2021 Outstanding Societal Impact Award

Current Work / Recent Updates

The main events for this quarter for BMES include a research symposium which brings together 15+ BME related labs in one place where students can talk to graduate students and learn about the type of research that is being done at UCI. Additionally, the MedTech Founders Program is working through its ideation phase this quarter which will culminate in an Idea Incubator where teams will present posters of their ideas.
