Background
The FUSION Engineering Project, as an integral component of FUSION, offers extensive learning opportunities that extend beyond the confines of traditional classroom education. This project fosters professional growth, catering to students at various stages of their educational journey, be it novices learning software applications like SolidWorks or TinkerCAD, or more seasoned engineering students seeking to grow their leadership capabilities through team management and mentorship. The FUSION Engineering Project (FEP) represents an intermediate-level project designed to impart crucial engineering skills to students at various stages of their academic journey.
Goal and Objectives
This year's project structure includes both mechanical and hardware components. The mechanical team is responsible for the design and prototyping of the frame and drivetrain, while the hardware team is responsible for the wiring of the rover and integrating any software needed. The objective of each team is to create a rover that’s able to dispense water by FUSIONCon, which is FUSION's end-of-the-year conference.
As of February 13th, each team will soon complete their first design reviews, where Project Mentors were able to provide each team with feedback on their initial designs. Currently, each team is in the manufacturing stage and is in the process of putting together its projects. By the end of the quarter, each team will be deep into hands-on prototyping and development.
Origin of Team Names
Manila Chillaz:
The team name Manila Chillaz was inspired by the city of Manila, the capital of the Philippines. Manila serves as the political, economic, and cultural heart of the Philippines, and our team pays homage to the importance of the city through our name. The “Chillaz” portion of the name represents the firefighting goals of our rover, with an aim to “chill” and quench the theoretical fires our rover will encounter.
Splash Bros:
“Splash Bros” is inspired by the Golden State Warriors’ well known duo Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson which resonated strongly with many team members. Additionally, the term “Splash” directly reflects the function of the project to extinguish fires through the deployment of water. We felt that the affiliation of “Bros” further exemplified the team’s connection to not only use this project to advance foundational knowledge but also come together as a community and support one another during this growth period. Overall, the name “Splash Bros” represents the team’s shared goals, collaborative spirit, and the core mission of developing a fully functional fire extinguishing RC car.
Rover-cooked:
Our team name features a play on words on the popular game “Overcooked”, which is a cooperative multiplayer game that requires players to cook and prepare dishes in the kitchen with proper teamwork and communication. By adding “R” to the start of the word, the pun on the game represents how our team will skillfully and collaboratively construct this rover together, while also having fun along the way like in the game. We also incorporated an extra meaning behind the team name through the slang phrase “to cook”, which means to do something exceptionally well or create something worthwhile. Our team aims “to cook” in this project and construct a rover that will create a lasting impact at FUSIONCon.
