UAV Forge - Guidance Navigation and Control

Background:

UCI's UAV Forge is an interdisciplinary team that participates in the Student Unmanned Aerial System Competition (SUAS) hosted in Maryland by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI). Each team is responsible for designing unmanned aerial and ground vehicles to undergo missions provided by the competition.

The Guidance Navigation and Control (GNC) subteam is a Capstone project group that operates within UAV Forge. It is in charge of getting the unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) safely down to the ground using an automated descent system that can navigate it in a specified direction. In addition, it also develops the scripts which will guide the UGV to its destination whether it be in the air or on the ground.

Goal and Objective:

  • Research and develop an alternative method to descend the unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) from 100 ft in the air
  • Write code that will navigate it using the descent mechanism to a specified waypoint
  • Have the UGV Recognize when it has landed on the ground
  • Design a navigation algorithm which will path the UGV automatically once landed
  • Incorporate kill "switch" for when specific conditions are met
