Design Build Fly 2018 - 2019

Design Build Fly 2018 - 2019

The competition for this year consists of three Flight Missions and one Ground Mission:

Ground Mission: Assembly crew members race to install radome and stores onto the aircraft as fast as possible

Mission 1: 3 laps within a 5 minute window.

Mission 2: Must complete 3 laps within a 5 minute window as fast as possible with the radome rotating in given areas of the course.

Mission 3: Aircraft must carry a minimum of 4 stores and complete a lap for each store carried. One store will be dropped per lap. The first four stores must be beneath the wing.

Design Requirements and Challenges

1) Aircraft must maximize store carried and dropped within 10 minutes

-High store count results in high cruise speed (<60 ft/s)

-Drag is a function of V^3

2) Aircraft must be stowed from a 3’x2’x2’ box

-Stowed configuration limits wing area: stall speed much higher

-Limits Propeller area

3) Aircraft must automatically deploy from its stowed configuration

-Folding requires extensive packaging

-High force actuators push balsa construction

-Limits in actual radio channels
