Anteater Electric Racing at the 2026 FSAE Competition

This past May, Anteater Electric Racing went to their first Formula SAE competition at the 2026 FSAE Competition in Michigan. Instagram: @anteaterelectricracing.

UCI’s 2026 FSAE EV (Electric Vehicle) race team traveled to the Michigan Speedway, Brooklyn, MI (Fig. 1) to compete against 88 collegiate engineering teams from around the world over five days, June 16-20. (Fig. 1)

This competition has fewer competitors but takes longer than the FSAE IC, because an extra day of technical inspection is required for  the electrical drive train and safety circuits (Fig. 2), as well as the mechanical systems consisting of the body, chassis, steering and brakes. The design, cost and presentation events occur on the second and third days of the event. (Fig. 3)

On the fourth day, the UCI team passed electrical and mechanical technical inspection, but was not able to complete the tilt and brake tests.  The FSAE EV design judges met with all the race teams to discuss their cars and to provide advice. (Fig. 4)

Seventeen California universities sent EV race teams to Michigan Speedway, all of the UC campuses (except UCSF), the two Cal Polys SLO and Pomona, and San Jose State and San Diego State, together with Santa Clara, Cal Tech, USC and Cal Baptist.  This makes the 2026 FSAE EV competition the collegiate race car competition with the largest number of participating California universities.

Of the 17 California universities only five completed Technical Inspection, Cal Poly SLO 7, San Jose State 23, UCLA 26, UCSB 30 and USC 37.  UCI’s EV team was ranked 70, which sets a baseline for the future as we rebuild after COVID.
