UCI’s 2026 Baja race team arrived in Washougal, WA the evening of May 6, and moved in early on May 7 to set up their paddock for the competition. (Fig. 1)
Even then, they were at the end of a long line for technical inspection. (Fig. 2)
Yet, the quality of their work resulted in their being the eighth car to pass, and they jumped to the head of the line for the other events. (Fig. 3)
The competition is divided into static events which include the design, cost and business reports, and the dynamic events consisting of acceleration, maneuverability, hill climb, rock crawl, and the endurance race. High performance is needed in every one of these events in order to score well in the competition.
Fig 4 shows the hill climb, which is very demanding on both the car and driver.
Fig. 5 shows the UCI car returning at the end of the punishing four hour endurance race. The car returned to the paddock three times for repairs. Despite this it completed 27 laps.
Out of 77 cars, UCI place 22nd, just behind San Diego State at 21st and UCLA at 20th. (Fig. 6)
There were 13 California teams in the competition. Cal Poly SLO placed 11, while the remaining teams were behind UCI, including San Jose State, UC Davis, and UC San Diego.
