Hoag Bone Plate Fixation Project

Background

There have been a number of cases where a patient's bone plate fixation fails and can cause a difficult surgical revision for reparation. When the fixation screw fails, it compromises the stability between the bone and the plate and causes micromotion and sheering. With the help of Dr. McCarthy and the Hoag Orthopedics Doctors, a new re-designed textured plate will be designed to reduce screw failure.

Winter 2021 Goal and Objectives

  • Manufacture both a single-screw textured and smooth plate
  • Perform tensile and cyclic testing on both the textured and smooth plates
  • Perform FEA simulations on the models in Solidworks
  • Compare data of the textured plate to that of the smooth plate
