Equitable Design Solutions: Modular Safety Glasses

DiversiTeam Logo

Background

Diversifying technology is an imperative mission that requires careful consideration of all consumers involved, no matter how small the demographic, as to ensure equity, inclusion, and representation for marginalized groups. DiversiTeam’s goal is to provide an equitable design solution to a product that failed to consider diversity in its initial implementation. In our redesign, we aim to account for accessibility issues and/or other needs that underrepresented groups may have for consideration within our future product. For Winter 2021, our team has decided to redesign contemporary safety glasses. Conventional safety glasses are not universally accessible, uncomfortable, and hinder convenience for simplicity, which causes many practical issues for users; especially those who suffer from anotia/microtia, eyeglass wearers, or those who generally have difficulties wearing standard glasses’ temples without discomfort. DiversiTeam's design will provide versatility to a product that will not only widen accessibility for users, but enhance convenience for all safety glass wearers.

Goal and Objectives

Our goal is to design modular safety glasses by the end of Winter Quarter 2021 to accommodate for individuals who have practical issues using standard safety glasses, especially those who suffer from anotia/microtia, eyeglass wearers, or those who generally have difficulties wearing standard glasses’ temples without discomfort.

Winter 2021

  • Develop a redesign of contemporary safety glasses.
  • Implement innovative features to accommodate the user.
  • Create a CAD model of our design.
  • Test concept model by running static and thermal simulations.
  • Determine whether the modular safety glasses design accounts for various accessibility issues and provide a better solution than conventional safety glasses.
